Using content knowledge to build meaningful curriculum

Students prepared in early childhood degree programs use their knowledge of academic disciplines to design, implement, and evaluate experiences that promote positive development and learning for each and every young child. Students understand the importance of developmental domains and academic (or content) disciplines in early childhood curricula. They know the essential concepts, inquiry tools, and structure of content areas, including academic subjects, and can identify resources to deepen their understanding. Students use their own knowledge and other resources to design, implement, and evaluate meaningful, challenging curricula that promote comprehensive developmental and learning out comes for every young child.

This is from ED334 Early Literacy and shows 6 activities for 7 different areas within early literacy learning. Though these are not complete lesson plans, a description and photo of each activity is shown and can be easily implemented into a lesson plan.

This artifact is from ED349: Family, Culture, and Community. This lesson is all about teaching students in the class about another culture that may be present in the classroom. This lesson is designed to be anti-biased and is to teach students about a different culture. By displaying different cultures within the classroom, students often feel more accepted and are more likely to engage and heighten their learning. This lesson includes lessons that can connect to social studies, phonics, math, art, fine motor skills, and writing.

This activity aligns with NAEYC Standard 5 by applying content knowledge of early math development to create meaningful and engaging learning experiences. The themed problems connect real-world scenarios with addition and subtraction, helping children build number sense in a fun and relevant context. This approach supports deeper understanding of mathematical concepts through intentional, playful instruction.
